Just after the COVID-19 global lock-down, companies started to shift from office to work from home. The newly emerged working practice has become a headache for many including myself. For most of the businesses, it was quite a time taking process to set their teams to continue working from home. Slower internet speed and less effective technological equipment welcomed us with open arms. But things were not the same for everyone. In fact, we can say that the world seems to be in the same storm, but not in the same boat. The whole world was facing difficulties in managing remote working. On the other hand, employees in the Netherlands were fully satisfied with their country’s flexible working culture. It is because before the COVID-19 crisis, most of the Netherlands population, almost 14.1% were working remotely.
The country strongly believes that it is important to look for the employees’ productivity rather than watching them sit straight on the desk for nine hours. The remote working culture was already quite popular in the country. People in the Netherlands were fully equipped. They already got great internet connection, smooth speed, Fast Netherlands VPN and all other stuff that is crucial to resume work from home.
Dutch managers also provide complete autonomy to their employees. There are no restrictions and employees can take as much leave as they want, only if their work is not compromising. Moreover, according to Bart Götte, a business futurist and psychologist based in Amersfoort, employers in the Netherlands also grab this opportunity to cut down their expenses for expensive office space. Instead of investing in the office spaces, they focus on strict pay legislation to make sure that all their employees are provided by healthy working facilities at home.
Not only that, a lot of other efforts were made to blossom remote working in the Netherlands. Their public libraries are converted into lavish and advanced working spaces. Besides that small, quality coffee shops are also serving facilities to the remote workforce.
In the Netherlands, almost 1.1 million workers are self-employed. The practice of resuming work from virtual offices has made things easier for freelancers, and small startups. These startups can invest in their business without spending too much for a dedicated office space.
There is no doubt that Dutch people are much more understanding towards their employees. They have normalized work from home and constantly provide support to the remote workers. They also better comprehended the entire technological infrastructure that is required to manage remote working.
Now, if we see other countries around the world then we can visibly analyze that most of the countries are lacking what Dutch has been implemented for a productive remote working culture.
Other countries may be stuck in their learning curves, but they need to learn values, procedures and policies from Dutch.
Due to the unfortunate COVID-19 outbreak, the world seems obliged to shift from office to remote working. Many countries are learning things on their own and it’s a great initiative that people are learning on their own, but adopting great things from others will be a great chance to be more productive in the times of crisis.
To run an effective work from home culture, digital literacy, autonomy and the use of the right tools are indispensible. In the near future, it is possible that remote working will be the future of the corporate world.
Remote working culture reduces employees’ stress of being outside the office, minimizes office rental expense and also increases the work productivity. Companies must take care of their workers and put in complete trust in employees. Otherwise, work from home will not prove to be a successful strategy for their business.
Moreover, businesses should also allocate proper tools and facilities so that workers can easily achieve their goals. If you lineup everything together rightly, then remote working might do wonders for you.
